Ship Detection with Envisat's Alternating Polarization Mode

چکیده
Work partly sponsored by the European Commission under the 5 Framework Program, contract EVG2-CT-2002-20002 Abstract A ship detection algorithm is developed that uses Envisat ASAR imagery in alternating polarisation mode. From airborne data it is shown that of the two copolarisations, HH is preferred over VV because of a larger ship-to-clutter ratio. Combining the HH and HV images of alternating polarisation mode, it is found that the correlation between the two images effectively reduces the number of false alarms.

Processing of Asar/ap Mode Data for Ship Detection
Ship detection is always a vital section of the marine application of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR), especially after the launch of ENVISAT in 2002. ASAR’s Alternating Polarization (AP) mode can simultaneously provide two well geo-registered images in different polarization pairs, namely VV/HH, HH/HV, and VV/VH. This dual polarization function can probably help to enhance the ship d...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Ship Detection Scheme for Spaceborne SAR Imagery
With the rapid development of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and the increasing need of ship detection, research on adaptive ship detection in spaceborne SAR imagery is of great importance. Focusing on practical problems of ship detection, this paper presents a highly adaptive ship detection scheme for spaceborne SAR imagery. It is able to process a wide range of sensors, imaging mod...
متن کاملThe Extended Sub-look Analysis In Polarimetric SAR Data For Ship Detection
The monitoring of maritime areas with remote sensing is essential for security reasons and also for the conservation of environment. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can play an important role in this matter by considering the possibility of acquiring high-resolution images at nighttime and under cloud cover. Recently, the new approaches based on the sub-look analysis for preserving the infor...
متن کاملImproving Ship Detection with Polarimetric SAR based on Convolution between Co-polarization Channels
The convolution between co-polarization amplitude only data is studied to improve ship detection performance. The different statistical behaviors of ships and surrounding ocean are characterized a by two-dimensional convolution function (2D-CF) between different polarization channels. The convolution value of the ocean decreases relative to initial data, while that of ships increases. Therefore...
متن کاملThe SUMO Ship Detector Algorithm for Satellite Radar Images
Search for Unidentified Maritime Objects (SUMO) is an algorithm for ship detection in satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. It has been developed over the course of more than 15 years, using a large amount of SAR images from almost all available SAR satellites operating in L-, Cand X-band. As validated by benchmark tests, it performs very well on a wide range of SAR image modes (from...
